What is the theory behind the Knee Posture Chair?
In the late 1970s the Norwegian Balans® chair, was designed by Peter Opsvik to take advantage of the biomechanical benefits of dropping the thighs in relationship to the spine. Muscular effort and lumbar sacral spine forces are more in balance front to back and side to side in the open thigh position and even more so when the legs are opened (abducted) creating what is called a "perched position".
How to Best Utilize Kneeling Posture Chairs
For most users, the kneeling sitting position involves the adoption of “new” movements. Muscles that have not been very active are put to use; and one therefore, may feel a bit stiff in the beginning of kneeling chair use. Some people need an adaptation period (1 to 2 weeks), not only for the muscles, but also regarding use of the chair itself. The whole concept of the “inclined seat” and knee cushion renders sitting and rising different from traditional chairs.
No one should remain in the same posture for great lengths of time, no matter what design of chair is being used.
We need variation. Kneeling chairs allow many different variations in posture. You can sit with both legs supported on the knee cushion, or with only one leg supported and the other stretched out, or if stable both legs out and straddling the knee rest in a perched position. When using the knee pad, you can regulate the pressure on the shins by moving up or down on the seat, etc…
Note: When sitting on a kneeling chair you are still sitting The knee cushion is there only to provide support for the shins - this is the Balans design & intention. One of the more common mistakes is to place too much pressure on the knee cushion -- sit on your bottom not on your knees! Always sit first then place one or both knees on the cushion.
Most of your body weight should still be supported by the seating surface, even though shifting your weight over to the legs and knee cushion now and then for a change gives welcome relief. When sitting on the knee chair with legs straddling the knee rest (perch position), body weight will be born by the three contact points (two feet and sit bones).
It is important that the kneeling chair be tried out under the same conditions as it will be used (i.e. working at a desk). You do not get the right impression of the chair by trying it out in the middle of the showroom floor. Move the chair up to a suitable table and try it!

Creating the habit of sitting in a variety of positions is encouraged by most ergonomic specialists. Movement is a key to reducing the physical stressors of sitting. There is no one best sitting position - In fact many ergonomists say motion is the key to comfortable, supportive sitting -- "the next position is the best position!
Kneeling chairs, like most seating, are best used in short sessions (get up and move around at least a few times an hour). Long term sitting in any chair design is not recommended.
Many users do not give up their traditional office chair but rather use both a kneeling chair and their traditional chair in tandem throughout the day. Sedentary and prolonged positioning whether in traditional or knee posture chairs is to be avoided.
Many customers over 6 feet tall find that some kneeling chair models do not accommodate their longer legs (eg Jobri 1425, Jobri 1427, BackSaver TSC 100). The wooden design Kneeling Chairs (models Jobri Knee Chair 1435 and Jobri Knee Chair 1430) and the Harold Knee Chair are a little more forgiving. The HAG Balans Kneeling Chair with the 200 mm pneumatic lift option is the most accomodating for longer legs.
