Kneeling chairs were designed and engineered in Norway in the 1970's and introduced into the US market in 1981. The knee chair (posture chair) was one of the first to look at the problems inherent in "right-angle" sitting and to offer an alternative posture with an open thigh to spine angle. This innovative kneeling chair position makes sitting upright feel effortless.
Other chair designs, responding to the problems "right angle" sitting presents, have evolved. These chairs encourage "perching" or a position half way between sitting and standing. The HAG Capisco (created by one of the original designers of the Balans Knee Chair) allows the legs to drop away from the spine and abduct (widen) at the pelvis. This position is often recommended for low back dysfunction by health professionals and is the position of stability in martial arts as well as the position the body assumes when floating in zero gravity space.
