About Indoor Cycling

Indoor cycling was invented in the late 80's. Group cycling classes at local health clubs have become increasingly popular over the past few years, and the number of home cyclists continues to rise.

Indoor bikes have a heavy flywheel in the front which allows you to simulate the feel of an outdoor bike propelled by the pedals. Unlike regular exercise bikes which come to a stop when you remove your foot from the pedal, an indoor bike will continue to move due to the design of the bike. The result is that you get a natural cycling motion as if you were riding a bicycle outdoors. On an indoor bike, when you tighten the resistance and come out of the saddle as you ride, you feel as if you're cycling up a steep hill.

Indoor bikes like the LifeSpan S4 are made of strong steel with sturdy pedal cranks to support your body when you come off the saddle and put pressure on the pedals. In contrast, regular upright exercise bikes usually have a lighter flywheel balanced in the center of the bike and are designed to be used primarily while in a seated position.

Proper Riding Position

When you sit on the seat, your knee should be slightly bent when the pedal is at the furthest point of rotation from your body. You should be able to pedal without locking your knee or shifting in the seat. The pedal straps should be tight enough to keep the ball of your foot on the pedals throughout the complete pedal rotation.
